I am looking for a vacation rental in New York, DC and Boston, but am wary of getting scammed.?

I used a website called vrbo, and I trust them but was looking at other options, including Craigslist. I know people can be shady on there, so I am already cautious, but a listing I inquired about sent me back bank routing information to send the deposit $ to. To me, that seems unusual and likely that it is a scam. I am wondering if anyone has had any experience with vacation rentals where they paid by sending money to a bank? Any help and any other ideas than vbro.com for finding vacation homes would be much appreciated!
